Llandudno
From Conservapedia
Llandudno (IPA /ɬan.'dɪd.nɔ/ ; approximately pronounced clan-did-no) is the largest resort town on the North Wales coast, situated within the county of Conwy and located in a beautiful setting on the Creuddyn Peninsula between the two limestone headlands of the Great Orme and the Little Orme. Its closeness to the Snowdonia National Park makes it a popular destination with both holidaymakers and walkers.
Llandudno is alternatively known as the 'Queen of the Welsh resorts', and as 'The Venice of North Wales', both names dating back to Victorian times when journeys to the seaside were becoming popular with the middle classes. Llandudno is unique amongst the Welsh resorts in retaining its charming Victorian waterfront.
The 2,295 foot long Llandudno Victorian Pier, which was greatly admired by Sir John Betjeman, the poet laureate, was built in 1878. It is the longest pier in Wales and one of the finest recreational piers in Britain. A British Tourist Authority report in 1975 said, "It zooms out of the sea in a spectacular Indian Gothic style like a Maharajah's palace floating on a lake."[1] Professor Codman's original Punch and Judy show is in the prime position on the promenade close to the Pier.
Due to its favourable location, situated between the Ormes, and surrounded by sea on three sides, Llandudno's climate is exceptionally mild, with temperatures of over 18°C in January and 21°C in November [2]. The average number of days of sunshine is 250, and snow is virtually unknown at sea level. However, snow does fall regularly on the slopes of the Great Orme, and there is a ski lift up to the slopes on the top, where both skiing, and tobogganing take place. [3] In 2008 Llandudno will host the Welsh Winter Games.
LLandudno is notable for the fact that Lewis Carroll (the pen name of the Reverend Charles Dodgson), used to visit the resort with young Alice Liddell. He would often take her to a secluded spot and enchant her with the tales of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.[4].
