The University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive public universities in the United States and ranks among the most prestigious. It is both the state land-grant university, with a strong tradition of education and public service, and the state's primary research university, with faculty of national and international reputation. It ranked #71 in US News's 2008 "National Universities: Top Schools" list.[3]
The University is home to more than 65,000 students, and grants over 370 degrees. It is located on two main campuses in the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.
History
Seven years before Minnesota became a state, in 1851 The University of Minnesota was first founded as a preparatory school. During The Civil War the school was forced to close, but in 1867 the school reopened with the help of John Sargent Pillsbury. Today Pillsbury Hall at the University of Minnesota is named in his honor.
Athletics
The football program has won 5 bowl games (while losing 7) and 6 national championships.[4]
